An Island of Grass

Grass Island 塔門

Grass Island or Tap Mun is an island in Hong Kong, located in the northeastern part of the territory. Its area is 1.69 km. It is part of the Tai Po District. There are about 100 people living on the island. The villagers are mostly farmers, merchants or fishermen. The latter category has recently diminished as many youths from fishing families have chosen to work in the city instead.

Here is a popular camp site. However, the great contrast of temperature and wind condition make people uncomfortable to adapt. It still worths to come as the sunrise and sunset here are so stunning! Have you seen a sun coming out just beyond the coastline?

Actually, there is not much to eat. There is one seafood restaurant and a number of small tea restaurants, many of which are known for 'ice-less' ice-cold milk tea and boiled squid dishes. Some fishermen of Grass Island make a living by selling their sun-dried catch. Sun-dried fish and shrimp are popular amongst local tourists. There are also temples for tourists to visit!

How to get there?

To the starting point:

Way 1.
Take a taxi from MTR University Station, Exit B, to Ma Liu Shui Ferry Pier for a kaito. The journey takes around 1.5 hours.
Way 2.
Take bus 94 from Sai Kung to Wong Shek Pier for a kaito. The journey takes around 35 minutes.

From the end point:Board a kaito at Tap Mun Pier for Ma Liu Shui or Wong Shek Pier.

Transportation HINTS!!

The kaito service is not frequent. You should check the time schedule before going there. Otherwise, you may miss the chance. For the kaito service schedule, please refer to the Transport Department website.

Last time, I went for a 2-day-1-night camping with my friend. I took the kaito from Ma Liu Shui Ferry Pier. It was a sunny day. I really enjoy the breeze during taking the kaito. The sea wind makes me feel relaxed!

When we arrived, the sunset just started. I quickly took out my camera and captured this beautiful moments!

Here is a place that I felt quiet and silence~Unlike the traditional speedy pace in Central and Causeway Bay, I love the atmosphere here~

In Tap Mum, there is a special characteristic-----COWS!

Somehow, they are so poor because the grass are mostly eaten by them. They face starve so they will search food from people, like the monkey in Shing Mun Reservoir. They know how to open the plastic bags and find out the rubbish for food. It is quite horrible when midnight comes!

This was another day now. I was watching the sunrise. Haha! It was romantic but actually it was so cold!!!!!!! I thought it was about 4 or 5 °C. >< But I thought it worths:)
